The Lost Art of Collective Football Programs…The Cover |
The cover of a football program is still to this day all about catching a moment in history. The ultimate challenge of that nostalgic feel was the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s when the Saturday game was the highlight of the week. Nothing reflected the era more than the cover of the “Big Game.
The art from this period was truly phenomenal. There were several artists that painted the autumn scene like no one else could. There was Robert Foster who specialized in Penn
University programs in the famous Franklin Field programs from the 1930’s. There was Gib Crockett who did the Army vs. Navy cover it seems like forever. It also essential to mention the creative Robert Crowther, Willard Mullin, Larry Tisdale, Billy Cam, Grant Powers, John Chase, Richard Stephens and Vernon Grant.
